Description
Percival P. Baxter, who was Maine's governor from 1921-1925, poses for a formal portrait with his beloved irish setter "Garryowen."
Garry often took the governor for long walks around the immediate neighborhood of the State House, and students who attended nearby Nash school used to wait eagerly on the corner to shake hands with Maine's foremost dog.
Governor Baxter donated 202,064 acres of wilderness to the state, a gift now known as Baxter State Park.
